"Ick"
Shot in and around Houston and Brenham, co-writer/director Joseph Kahn’s throwback creature feature comedy Ick pits Brandon Routh’s high school science teacher Hank against a plant-like alien species intent on consuming and controlling the residents of a small town under quarantine. Hank lives an unassuming life, the result of sustaining an ick-related high school injury 20 years earlier that ended a promising career in football. While the ick has spread throughout the town for several decades, it has never posed a true threat to the community—until now. When the ick starts to attack local residents, Hank springs into action to save a town abandoned by the U.S. military. Ick also stars American Pie’s Mena Suvari as Hank’s high school girlfriend Staci and A Series of Unfortunate Events’ Malina Weissman as Staci’s (and possibly Hank’s) daughter Grace. Ick also features a soundtrack of emo, rock, and pop punk hits by the likes of All-American Rejects, Creed, and Paramore from the late 1990s and early 2000s. Ick, which premiered locally during last year’s Fantastic Fest, will screen July 27-29 at various local theaters via Fathom Events. Raised in Houston, Joseph Kahn got his start directing music videos for most of the major acts of the past three decades, including Taylor Swift, Janet Jackson, George Michael, DMX, U2, Backstreet Boys, and Destiny’s Child. He previously directed the 2004 action film Torque, the 2011 time-travel black comedy Detention, and the 2017 battle rap dramedy Bodied. Brandon Routh rose to fame as Clark Kent/Superman in the 2006 Superman Returns legacy sequel and made guest appearances as the Man of Steel in various DC TV series. He played The Atom in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl. He also starred in the films Zack and Miri Make a Porno, The Informers, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and Dylan Dog: Dead of Night.
