Interview:
Bob Ray,
director,
"Total Badass"
In the late 2000s, Austin-based filmmaker Bob Ray began shooting a documentary about his close friend and local underground legend Chad Holt. The end result, the raw and unapologetically honest Total Badass, found the musician, actor, and “Whoopsy!” zine publisher living his most authentic life. Holt opened up to Ray about his drug use and dealing, his sexual exploits, and his run-ins with the law as he pursued his artistic endeavors in Austin and attempted to somewhat clean up his act when his son came to live with him. Holt died at age 46 of rectal cancer in 2019, nine years after Total Badass’ premiere and the national promotional tour he undertook with Ray. To celebrate Holt’s life and legacy, Bob Ray will present a 15th anniversary reedit of Total Badass at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Hyperreal Film Club, one day after what would been Holt’s 53rd birthday. Ray also is launching the online series Odd Odyssey, which chronicles his and Holt’s 2010 misadventures on the road. Bob Ray previously directed the 2001 music comedy Rock Opera, which starred Chad Holt, and the 2007 roller derby documentary Hell on Wheels.
