Interview:
Benjamin Flaherty,
director,
"Shuffle"
![]() Directed by Austin-based filmmaker Benjamin Flaherty, the documentary Shuffle explores the rise of addiction treatment care following the implementation of the Affordable Care Act in 2014. Shuffle not only documents how it is often more profitable for providers to keep people in addiction treatment but exposes the loopholes that allow unscrupulous providers to exploit an essential service that has no financial cap on costs. Flaherty offers portraits of two addicts, Corey and Daniel, stuck in a vicious cycle of addiction treatment for various reasons, while following the struggles of Nicole to get treatment after aging off her parent's health insurance plan. Flaherty began work on Shuffle while in recovery for alcoholism and living in a sober house. Shuffle screens at the Alamo South Lamar during the SXSW Film & TV Festival at 6:45 p.m. March at the Alamo South Lamar, 2:30 p.m. March 11 at the Alamo South Lamar, and 6:15 p.m. March 12. Austin-based filmmaker and commercials director Benjamin Flaherty makes his feature-length documentary directorial debut with Shuffle. He previously directed the 2002 short feature film Tuscaloosa Aired: March 5, 2025. Web sites: https://schedule.sxsw.com/2025/films/2206190 https://www.benjaminflaherty.com/ |
