Sound Unseen Austin 2026
After last year’s hiatus, a revitalized Sound Unseen Austin returns with a 2026 edition that will run Aug. 6-9 at the AFS Cinema. Placing an emphasis on documentaries, the music film festival opens Aug. 6 with a 20th anniversary screening of The Chicks: Shut Up & Sing with director Barbara Kopple and Cecilia Peck in attendance. The features lineup is rounded out by Sara Bareilles: Good Grief and BP Fallon: Rock’’n’Wizard on Aug. 7; The Song of Hiawatha: The Life and High Times of the First Black Hippie and the Austin-focused You Can Color Outside the Lines: The Story of the Big Boys on Aug. 8; and Janis Ian: Breaking Silence and Don’t Forget Me: Eddie Cochran on Aug. 9. The festival also includes the Super Awesome Kickass Shorts Program—featuring a mix of narratives, documentaries, and music videos—on Aug. 8. Sound Unseen Austin is a satellite event of the Minneapolis-based Sound Unseen Film + Music Festival, which launched in 1999.
