The Austin Film Society's September 2025 programming at the AFS Cinema is highlighted by the series The Epic Kink of Cecile B. DeMille, featuring 1932's The Sign of the Cross in 35mm, 1934's Cleopatra, and 1949's Samson and Delilah. Special screenings include the Labor Appreciation Short Film Showcase and Austin-based Chelsea Hernandez's 2019 documentary Building the American Dream on Sept. 1; the documentary The 9 Lives of Barbara Dane on Sept. 15 and 17 with director Maureen Gosling and producer Jed Riffe in attendance; an encore presentation of the local documentary Faders Up: The John Aielli Experience on Sept. 21 with Austin-based directors Sam Wainwright Douglas and David Hartstein in attendance; and the Queer Cinema: Lost & Found selection Castration Movie with director Louise Weard in conversation with series programmer Elizabeth Purchell. New releases include The American Southwest, directed by Austin-based nature filmmaker Ben Masters, and The Animation Mixtape, a compilation of new and old shorts curated by Austin-based animator Don Hertzfeldt. Documentaries include Milisuthando and the Alex Ross Perry-directed Videoheaven. Repertory screenings include City of God, The Friend, Happiness, The Limey, Linda Linda Linda, Oldboy, Peking Opera Blues, and the Lates selections Christiane F., Deprisa, Deprisa, and Rosa La Rose, Fille Publique.
