September 2024 Programming
The Austin Film Society's September 2024 programming is highlighted by the Frederick Wiseman: Eight Systems series, which comprises of eight films by the master documentary filmmaker that will screen across two months. The AFS Cinema will also host multiple filmmakers and authors throughout the month, including writer/director Shu Lea Cheang for her Queer Cinema: Lost & Found selection Fresh Kill; "Cockfight: A Fable of Failure" author Kier-La Janisse for Monte Hellman's Cockfighter; director Jon Jost for Tourists; director Adam Weiner of Low Cut Connie for Art Dealers; director Alex Rappaport for With Peter Bradley; director Pamela Yates and producer Paco de Onís for Borderland: The Line Within; "Medusa of the Roses" author Navid Sinaki for a special screening of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Querelle; and AFS founder Richard Linklater and to-be-announced cast and crew members for the belated 30th anniversary of Dazed & Confused at the Paramount Theatre. Austin-based animator Don Hertzfeldt's new short Me, paired with his 2012 feature It's Such a Beautiful Day, enjoys an encore run at the AFS Cinema. New releases include Between the Temples, Seeking Mavis Beacon, and Sirocco and the Kingdom of Winds. There will be a community of the documentary The World is Watching Gaza, Gaza is Watching the World. Retrospective screenings include 2001: Space Odyssey, Adieu Philippine, Far From Home, A Fish Called Wanda, Paris, Texas, Roman Holiday, The Third Man, and the Lates selections Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space, North Sea is Dead Sea, and A Real Young Girl.
