![]() The Austin Film Society's October 2024 programming is highlighted by the series To the Front, which feature three films about the experiences of teenage girls in the 1990s, with Foxfire's Annette Haywood-Carter, Just Another Girl on the I.R.T.'s Leslie Harris, and Whatever's Susan Skoog all in attendance. The Austin Film Society also will partner with the physical media boutique label Vinegar Syndrome for screenings of Saul Bass's Phase IV and David Cronenberg's Existenz. The Frederick Wiseman: Eight Systems series concludes with four films by the master documentary filmmaker. The AFS Cinema will also host screenings of Faders Up: The John Aielli Experience, a documentary about the late host of the KUTX morning show "Eklektikos." Music offerings include the Invincible Czars performing its live score to Nosferatu: Symphony of Terror; Maru Haru performing the original music score by James Tabat to the 1914 silent Asian-American drama The Oath of the Sword; Mike Hosty performing with Shinyribs' Kevin Russell after the screening of the documentary Oklahoma Breakdown; a 35mm engagement of the Led Zeppelin 1976 concert film The Song Remains the Same; and screenings of We Are Fugazi from Washington, D.C. with Austin-based co-curator and "Fugazi's In On The Kill Taker" author Joe Gross in attendance. New releases include The Substance, The Union, and the Best of the Fests selection In the Summers. Documentaries include Getting It Back: The Story of Cymande and Scala!!! Retrospective screenings include a 10th anniversary screening of Emily Hagins' Austin-shot Halloween romcom Grow Up, Tony Phillips; 50th anniversary screenings of Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre; Dazed and Confused; Phantom of the Paradise; Shoeshine; I Walked With a Zombie; the Queer Cinema: Lost & Found presentation of Dario Argento's Four Flies on Grey Velvet; and the Lates selections Dogra Magra and Beauty and the Beast.
