Interview:
Angela Lynn Tucker,
director,
"The Inquisitor"
Few Texas politicians made their presence felt as quickly and as powerfully on both state and national levels as Houston’s Barbara Jordan. Directed by Angela Lynn Tucker, the documentary The Inquisitor chronicles the life, career, and retirement years of the first Black woman elected to the Texas Senate, elected to the U.S. Congress from the south, and to deliver a keynote address at the Democratic National Convention. Tucker examines what led Jordan to first run for political office; her ability to reach across the aisle in both the Texas Senate and the U.S. Congress; the national recognition she received during the Richard Nixon impeachment process; and the factors that contributed to her 1979 retirement and settling in Austin to work as an adjunct professor the University of Texas’ Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs. The title of Tucker’s documentary comes from Jordan’s 15-minute statement on July 24, 1974, to the House Judiciary Committee regarding the impeachment of President Richard Nixon. The Inquisitor will screen at 7:15 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Texas Spirit Theatre during the Austin Film Festival. Louisiana-based filmmaker Angela Lynn Tucker previously directed the documentary (A)sexual and the narrative features All Styles and A New Orleans Noel.
