Interview:
Andrew Bujalski,
writer/director,
"There There" Installation
![]() Austin-based writer/director Andrew Bujalski revisits his 2022 experimental drama There There as an art installation at the Museum of Human Achievement. The film, which follows a chain of real and imaginary "duet" conversations conducted by varying pairs of friends, family members, lovers, and strangers, is projected onto three screens in a corridor space to create an immersive experience. Each side screen features footage of one of the two characters engaged in the "duet" conversation, while the center screen plays the film's credits sequences, musical interstitials, and other connective material. The conversations also loop into each other. The installation, which opened Feb. 21, will remain open to the public on Feb. 28-March 2 and March 7-8 at the Museum of Human Achievement. Andrew Bujalski will participate in a post-screening QA of There There at the AFS Cinema on Feb. 26; the screening will at 7;30 p.m. Also, Austin Film Society lead film programmer Lars Nilsen will hold a "talkback" sessions with Andrew Bujalski at 7:30 p.m. March 1 at the museum. A product of the COVID-19 lockdown and its resulting safety protocols, but not about the pandemic, There, There required Bujalski to shoot each conversation with paired cast members in isolation in different locations, often with the actors not knowing who would be their scene partner. He also directed the actors offsite via video. The cast includes Jason Schwartzman, Lili Taylor, Fear the Walking Dead’s Lennie James, and Good Boys and The Bear’s Molly Gordon. The Austin-based Andrew Bujalski previously directed Support the Girls, Results, Computer Chess, Beeswax, People's Houses, Mutual Appreciation, and Funny Ha Ha. He also co-wrote the Disney+ live-action version of Lady and the Tramp. Aired: Feb. 26, 2025.
