![]() Austin-based Black Pumas guitarist/producer Adrian Quesada and Fort Worth singer-songwriter Abraham Alexander both know what it means to tour the country in support of new music. But hitting the Oscars campaign trail is a first for both Quesada and Alexander. On March 2, Quesada and Alexander will learn whether their inspirational song “Like a Bird” has earned them the Academy Award for Original Song. Quesada and Alexander recorded “Like a Bird” for Sing Sing, Austin-based co-writer/director Greg Kwedar’s fact-based drama about a group of prisoners who seek solace and creative freedom in the New York State correctional facility’s theater program. In addition to Original Song, Sing Sing is also nominated for Best Actor for Colman Domingo and Best Adapted Screenplay for Kwedar, his creative partner, Clint Bentley, and cast members Clarence Maclin, and John “Divine G” Whitfield. Grammy winner Adrian Quesada is a member of the Austin-based psychedelic soul duo The Black Pumas, which released its self-titled debut album in 2020 and its follow-up album “Chronicles of a Diamond” in 2023. He released his solo album “Jaguar Sound” in 2022, and he also performs with Trio Asesino. He recently produced the mixtape-style soundtrack for the Austin-made social comedy Home Free, collaborating with such other musician as Mix Master Mike of The Beastie Boys, J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr., Luscious Jackson, and Ghostland Observatory. Fort Worth singer-songwriter Abraham Alexander released his debut album “Sea/Sons” in 2023. Aired: Feb. 26, 2025.
